To be honest, I am not a very avid poetry reader. I have never really connected with poetry, and have never really been interested in analyzing poems. I have written poems before, but that was agonizing and done only because I was assigned to do so. I can appreciate poets and all the effort that may go into writing a poem, but I just can not muster any interest in what they have to say.
To me, poetry is something that is not written in paragraph form. It doesn't necessarily have to rhyme, nor does it have to make sense. It can be ambiguous, and it doesn't have to have an excess of colorful, descriptive language. I don't even think that poetry has to have any real deep meaning, and can be trivial. I think that the only thing that a poem really needs in order to be considered a poem is that the author must create it with the intentions of writing a poem. The saying that anyone can write poetry is completely true, and I am not sure if anyone can really write good poetry, because I don't have an appreciation for good poetry and couldn't recognize it if I tried.
